The Yoga LAB - Intro to Backbends

Our series of fun and non-intimidating workshops returns for 2024!  These two-hours workshops are tailored for beginners as well as those who want to revisit the foundations of the Vinyasa Yoga practice.

We will continue to break down the fundamental concepts and principles of Vinyasa Yoga, delving further into arm balancing and inversions, as well as dedicating a workshop to the magic of backbending.

We take the time to analyze essential and most common Yoga poses, how to get into and out of them, and most importantly - how to tailor them to your body and your practice.

Each session will start with a proper warm-up and end with a few yin poses and a soothing Savasana.

You will leave each workshop not only feeling stronger but also more confident and empowered the next time you join a group class!

This is perfect for you if you have recently started practicing, or if you have taken a break from the mat for whatever reason. It can serve as a perfect transition if you have started yoga online and now want to move to in-person classes! But these workshops are open to anyone who fancies going "back to basics" and learn tips and tricks that we never have time to share during a 60 minutes class.

An intro to… Backbends

The family of backbends is very wide and diverse. It includes well-known poses such as Cobra Pose, or Bhujangasana, and Upward Facing Dog, or Urdvha Mukha Svanasana, which are an integral part of Sun Salutations. Yet, despite their name, there is a lot more to the art of back bending than simply having "a bendy spine". We will focus on the role and importance of shoulder mobility and shoulder rotation, as well as the key role played by the posterior chain muscles - aka glutes and hamstrings.

When you know how to engage your back muscles properly, backbends can become an exhilarating part of your yoga practice. Expect to play around with Wheel, or Urdhva Dhanurasana, and Camel, or Ustrasana, amongst others. Prepare to open your heart and be surprised by how strength and flexibility go hand in hand!
